Four leading resorts in Los Cabos, the ‘Golf Capital of Latin America,’ have received a 2021 Editors’ Choice Award from Golf Digest in the ‘Best Golf Resorts in Mexico & Central America’ category.

“This is Year 6 of our annual Editors’ Choice Awards package, offering once again an assortment of products that can help golfers play better, smarter and healthier in 2021,” said Ryan Herrington, the magazine’s deputy digital editor. “Additionally, we also recognize top destinations and travel-related services in hopes that golf trips will be something we can all enjoy again in the not-to-distant future.”

“Golfers dream big,” the awards report stated. ”We all want to play the greatest courses and stay in the most luxurious hotels and inns, and when our thoughts drift to where we might travel, we often settle on the legendary destinations.”

That includes Los Cabos, the glamorous getaway at the tip of the Baja Peninsula that claimed four of the eight spots in its bracket, more than any other destination in the region.

Heading the winner’s list is Cabo del Sol, the 36-hole facility credited with putting Los Cabos on the international golf map when its Ocean Course debuted in 1994. Renamed the Cove Club and reopened in 2019 with new holes, rebuilt bunkers, improved playing surfaces and a new landscape scheme, the layout occupies what course designer Jack Nicklaus once described as “the best golf property I’ve ever seen.” Holes stretch across a stunning desert landscape touched by the Sea of Cortes and framed by rugged mountains. Tall cardon cacti and tawny granite outcrops stake out the fairways and greens. Comfort stations on both nines offer Mexican specialties and ice-cold refreshments. The Cove Club was conceived as a members-only facility but is accepting limited tee time reservations through the fall.

Cabo del Sol’s second venue is the Desert Course, Tom Weiskopf’s first design effort in Mexico. Shoehorning holes into craggy desert terrain crisscrossed by canyon-like arroyos, Weiskopf produced a brilliant design, weaving holes around rock outcrops and through a thick cactus forest. To defend the greens, which feature long slopes and subtle rolls, Weiskopf built large bunkers with distinctive capes and bays. Featuring an enticing blend of long and short holes, numerous risk-reward options and panoramic ocean views, the Desert Course presents a classic test and ranks among Cabo’s finest golf experiences.

Cabo del Sol is graced by a hacienda-style clubhouse, its open-air verandas and terraces offering picturesque ocean and fairway views. On-site beachfront hotels include Hacienda del Mar Los Cabos, its architecture inspired by a traditional Mexican village; and Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos, an all-inclusive golf and spa hotel perched on a sea cliff.

Also receiving a 2021 Editors’ Choice Award is newcomer Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas. Centerpiece of an 834-acre resort and residential community set in rolling desert foothills that tumble down to the Pacific Ocean, the development’s airy beachfront hotel is walking distance from a Greg Norman Signature course opened last year. Known for his ‘least-disturbance’ design approach, Norman created a low-profile layout at Rancho San Lucas with ocean views from every hole. Earthmoving was kept to a minimum: the site’s contours and topography were ideal for the routing of a world-class course. Spanning three different ecosystems, the sturdy 7,210-yard layout rambles through huge windswept dunes at the start, climbs through groves of giant cardon cacti creased by winding arroyos, and returns players to the beach and sea at the finish. The layout’s defining feature is its revetted pot bunkers. These steep-walled sandy pits were constructed from recycled artificial turf and are nearly identical to the natural sod-walled bunkers found on British links courses.

In addition to a pair of on-course comfort stations, a handsome ranchero-style clubhouse overlooks the fairways and sea. Rancho San Lucas is a private club with exclusive access available to guests of Solmar Group hotels, including the on-site Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas Resort.

One&Only Palmilla earns its moniker as the “Grande Dame” of Los Cabos. Palmilla Golf Club, the first Jack Nicklaus Signature course in Latin America, is located five minutes from a legendary hideaway built in 1956 by the son of a former president of Mexico. The glamour and ambience of the original resort was carefully preserved at One&Only Palmilla, which opened in 2004 following a $90-million expansion and refurbishment. This ultra-luxe property, continuously upgraded to retain its iconic status, is set on a rocky promontory that juts into the Sea of Cortes, its protected sandy coves fronting azure-blue waters calm enough for swimming. The hotel is a perennial favorite of Hollywood A-listers.

Palmilla’s Mountain and Arroyo nines, chiseled into in a box-shaped canyon walled in by steep stony peaks, set the stage for top-shelf golf in Los Cabos when the core 18 opened in 1992. Routed around boulder-strewn arroyos and cactus-covered foothills, Palmilla was the first course in the hemisphere to partake of Cabo’s unique mountain, desert and ocean ecosystem. Tournament-tough from the tips, the layout’s wide fairways and open-entry greens accommodate players of lesser attainment. The club’s Ocean nine, which features a 600-foot elevation change that carries players from the mountains to the sea, is currently closed for revisions and will reopen at a later date.

The final Editors’ Choice Award was claimed by Quivira Golf Club, a spectacular layout grafted onto a dazzling Land’s End site at the exact place where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean. Arguably the most daring and eclectic course Jack Nicklaus has ever built, Quivira, his sixth design in Los Cabos, is an aesthetic tour de force and an unforgettable test from any set of tees.

Highlighted by risk-reward options and breathtaking drops from tee to fairway, Quivira offers more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos. This breezy, multi-themed layout starts at sea level, climbs the face of a mountain, tiptoes along sheer granite cliffs, zigzags through massive sloping dunes, and ambles across rolling desert foothills. A Nicklaus favorite is the short par-4 fifth hole, its slanted fairway wedged between a shouldering dune on the right and a vertical cliff on the left 275 feet above the thrashing sea. The target is a semi-blind, cliff-hanging green tucked well below the fairway.

An all-inclusive facility, Quivira serves Mexican fare and refreshments at four comfort stations, including the open-air Oasis set above the eighth green. The private club is accessible to guests of Pueblo Bonito Golf & Spa Resorts’ five properties. Golfers gravitate to the nearby Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, a deluxe adults-only beachfront property where the accommodations, Armonia Spa, dining options and technicolor sunsets are exceptional. All Editors’ Choice Awards winners are currently featured on GolfDigest.com. Select award winners will appear in print in Issue #3 of Golf Digest magazine.

On either sides of the country, Los Cabos and Riviera Maya are attracting golfers seeking communities with quality courses at a range of prices.

Mexico has long attracted both vacationers and second-home buyers looking for a sun-filled escape. More recently, the country has become just as popular as a golfing destination and has a solid lineup of properties on both the west and east coasts for buyers seeking a golf home.

“Golf in Mexico is huge and shows no signs of slowing down,” said Josh Sens, a writer for Golf magazine. “It’s a very international market that brings in Americans, Canadians and even Europeans.”

Greg Norman, the retired professional golfer and course architect who has designed seven courses in Mexico and has three more in the works, agreed, adding that prospective buyers may be interested in owning property in the country because it offers enjoyable activities beyond golf. “You can get in great rounds but also have fun with amazing snorkeling and diving, gorgeous beaches, hiking and mountain biking,” he said.

In the time of a pandemic, spurred by the promise of outdoorsy living and open spaces, buyers seem to be more interested in Mexico in the last year than they have been in the past. Home sales in developments where golf is a primary attraction have increased — in some cases significantly — since the onset of the pandemic in Mexico’s two most notable golf home markets: Los Cabos, on the west coast, and Riviera Maya, on the east.

At the 1,400 acre Twin Dolphin, in Los Cabos, for example, sales tripled from Sept. 1 to March 1, compared with the same period the year before, according to the managing director Neil Johnson, and prices for properties increased 40 percent.

It has been an absolute feeding frenzy since Covid,” he said.

Here is a look at the real estate landscape in the two regions.

An estate at Rancho San Lucas in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Los Cabos

Located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, Los Cabos offers coastline, desert and mountains. It is also home to at least 18 golf courses, with more on the way.

“Cabo is the epicenter of golf in Mexico and the most established market,” Mr. Sens said. “The game is booming there with fantastic courses in swish developments.”

These developments include Cove Club, an 1,800-acre community with a Jack Nicklaus-designed course; Diamante, with three golf courses including two designed by Tiger Woods and Davis Love III; and Cabo Real, a 2,800-acre community (part of Questro Golf, a consortium of three courses) with 3.2 miles of beachfront and a Robert Trent Jones, Jr.- designed course.

According to local brokers, most of Cabo’s real estate communities are upscale with home prices starting at $2 million. “You have the top end of luxury here,” said Saddia Rahaman, a real estate adviser with Engel & Volkers, who resides in Los Cabos. “It’s not uncommon to find listings for $10 million and above that have interested buyers in heated bidding wars.”

More evidence of Cabo’s high prices: a recent survey of 175 buyers from Golf Life Navigators, a site that matches people with golf memberships and homes, found that the average real estate budget for a golf home in Cabo is just over $730,000.

Despite the prices, sales have been flourishing throughout all parts of Cabo.

Ms. Rahaman said that her company saw nearly $141 million in sales in 2020, versus around $103 million in 2019 — despite the fact that Los Cabos was shut down from March to June. “Cabo has always been a popular second-home market, but the pandemic pushed sales to unprecedented levels,” she said.

Querencia, a nearly 2,000-acre community near the airport with a Tom Fazio-designed golf course, saw home sales increase 40 percent from 2019 to 2020, according to Andrea Geisler, who works in real estate sales for the brand. Querencia’s 140 properties face either the mountains or the course, although 30 oceanfront condos are currently under construction. Prices for a 4,000 square-foot residence begin at $2 million, Ms. Geisler said.

“Most buyers come for the golf, although our other amenities such as the beach, two swimming pools and bike trails attract some nongolfers,” Ms. Geisler said.

One of the newest communities in the area, Rancho San Lucas, debuted 32 contemporary hacienda-style luxury homes in 2019 that cost from $3.7 million to around $7 million and 120 villas priced from $425,000 to $1.5 million. Greg Reisdorf, the property’s project director, said that 15 of these properties were sold from November 2020 to February of this year — the busiest period since sales began in January 2019. Rancho San Lucas, which sprawls across 834 acres, has the trappings of a resort: a course designed by Greg Norman; 15 miles of jogging and bike trails; three pools; and a spa with outdoor treatment rooms.

Brokers and developers said that most golf home buyers in Cabo were from California and Texas because both states offer multiple nonstop flights to Los Cabos. However, buyers from the East Coast, Canada, South America and Europe are an increasing part of the mix.

The Mayakoba water sports and diving center in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Riviera Maya

Set on the Caribbean Sea on Mexico’s east coast, Riviera Maya is a region on the Yucatán Peninsula to the south of Cancún that stretches to Tulum and beyond. Visitors come to enjoy the scenic coastline and Mayan ruins like the pre-Columbian city of Chichén Itzá.

Compared with Cabo, Mr. Norman said that the Riviera’s golf culture is still developing. “Golf in Riviera Maya is a byproduct of the success of Cancún, which has little room to expand much more and even less room to accommodate sprawling golf courses,” he said.

Jay Fletcher, the owner of Riviera Maya Real Estate Brokers (he also owned a real estate company in Cabo), said that the area had at least six courses with 18 holes. “All the courses are in residential communities and are becoming a reason why international buyers invest in homes here,” he said.

Examples of those communities include Mayakoba, home to El Camaleón, an 18-hole PGA Tour golf course designed by Mr. Norman, and a golf school from the renowned instructor Jim McLean; Bahia Principe, where the showpiece is an 18-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones II set amid jungles, lakes and cenotes; and Corasol, a gated beachfront residential complex with three different communities and a golf course designed by the Zimbabwean golfer Nick Price.

So why Riviera Maya over Cabo? For one thing, it’s generally more affordable, Mr. Fletcher said. While luxury properties can range from $2 million to $8 million, there are plenty of two-bedroom, two-bath condos available for $300,000 and oceanfront penthouses for $1.2 million. “In some instances, prices are almost half of what they are in Cabo for comparable properties,” Mr. Fletcher said.

In a scenario similar to Cabo, home sales appear to be on the rise in some but not all instances in the wake of the pandemic, according to brokers and developers.

Mr. Fletcher, for example, said that his business slowed in the first few months of pandemic when Mexico was in lockdown but has since resumed to pre-Covid levels. On the other hand, Jason Waller, the owner of Playa Real Estate Group, said that his company has had record-breaking sales. “In 2020, we had $10 million in sales, and in the first two months of this year, we’re already at $13 million,” he said. “Golf is now a huge attraction which wasn’t the case a few years ago.”

A Rosewood residence in Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Mayakoba, which has branded residences from Rosewood and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, has also seen an increase in sales, according to Kappner Clark, a spokeswoman for the development.

Rosewood’s portfolio includes 33 villas set along a lagoon and five beachfront homes; prices range from $3.6 million to more than $10 million. Fairmont’s 37 residences are built along the lagoons and the golf course and have a starting price of $1.4 million; they are also available for monthly fractional ownership for a starting price of $219,000. (An additional 33 Fairmont residences, yet to be built, are currently for sale). Although Ms. Clark declined to offer specific numbers, she said that sales were up in the second half of 2020 and the first two months of this year, compared with the year before.

Mareazul, a community within Corasol, had $12 million in sales in 2020, an increase of 25 percent from the year before. The 300 homes range in price from $400,000 to $1.2 million, said Luis Garcia, the chief commercial officer of Mareazul Capital, which owns the community, and have been popular with buyers from the United States, as well as Canada, Brazil, France and England.

“We’ve always had Americans and Canadians but have seen a big influx of Europeans since Covid who want to come here for a lifestyle that includes golf plus the beach,” he said.

Accessibility may play a role: prepandemic and even now, many international destinations have direct flights to Cancun International Airport including London, Lisbon, Paris and Lima, Peru.

Travel came to a standstill when the pandemic struck last year. Airplanes, trains and cruise ships emptied. Crowds deserted tourist attractions like Venice’s canals, the Louvre and the Empire State Building. Most of the world hunkered down at home, waiting for conditions to improve.

The global COVID-19 vaccine rollout offers some hope for 2021, allowing stir-crazy, grounded travelers to start planning their next getaway. To help inspire those next adventures, Forbes Travel Guide presents its 2021 Star Awards for the world’s best luxury hotels, restaurants and spas.

The 63rd annual list features 283 Five-Star, 576 Four-Star and 438 Recommended hotels; 73 Five-Star, 136 Four-Star and 77 Recommended restaurants; and 90 Five-Star and 200 Four-Star spas worldwide. (The winners were surveyed both before the pandemic and once regional restrictions allowed FTG’s incognito evaluators to visit.)

To rate properties, Forbes Travel Guide inspectors stay at each hotel for three days and two nights, posing as regular guests and paying their own way. They test up to 900 objective, stringent standards, from modern-day luxuries—such as whether a room is set up to enhance sleep, and the food-and-beverage choices are health-conscious—to more traditional luxuries, like the quality of the interior décor and design of the staff’s uniforms.

Even in the midst of a global pandemic, service remains paramount. It’s more important than ever before that properties demonstrate the utmost regard for their guests’ wellbeing: 75 percent of a hotel’s rating is based on its service and genuine care and concern shown by the staff, while 25 percent is determined by the quality of its facilities.

When you’re ready to travel again—whether it’s to embark on a far-flung escape or a low-key staycation—check into one of the best hotels in the world. See the full list of Star-Rated properties here.

Golfweek’s Ultimate Guide to Great Escapes has been released, and once again Los Cabos excels on the publication’s roster of the ‘Top 50 Mexico, Caribbean, Atlantic and Central America’ courses. Thirteen golf facilities in Los Cabos, the dazzling Land’s End destination at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, appear on the list, with three venues in the top 10 and seven courses in the top 20.

According to the publication, “Rater scores based on 10 criteria are averaged to identify the best courses in Mexico, Caribbean, Atlantic and Central America for 2021.” Golfweek’s rankings are further proof that Los Cabos has established itself as the unrivalled Golf Capital of Latin America. No other destination in Mexico boasts as many courses on the elite roster.

In addition to its world-class courses, Los Cabos has recaptured nearly 80% of all travel activity due to the destination’s swift response to control the spread of COVID-19. Strict safety guidelines and health protocols are in place at all golf courses, hotels, restaurants and activity centers to ensure the well-being of all travelers visiting the destination. As of early March, the COVID-19 threat risk in Baja California Sur has been reduced from orange to yellow, i.e., “resume limited activities, but with precaution.

Commanding the No. 1 position on Golfweek’s list is the Dunes Course at Diamante, the flagship of a 1,500-acre private resort community on the destination’s west coast. Opened in 2009, the Dunes Course is a 7,022-yard behemoth carved by Davis Love III into massive rolling dunes set back from the Pacific Ocean. This windswept, topsy-turvy links, which offers great diversity and spectacular views, rambles past huge blowout bunkers and tufted sand hills on its journey to and from the sea. Among the feature holes is the 590-yard par-5 18th, which offers multiple landing areas and plays to a shelf-like green perched 50 feet above the fairway. Guests of the on-site Nobu Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel enjoy exclusive access to the Dunes Course, subject to availability.

Cabo del Sol (Cove Club), ranked No. 4 and formerly known as the Ocean Course, is the epic layout that put Los Cabos on the international golf map when it opened in 1994. Intent on producing the ‘Pebble Beach of the Baja’ on what he described as “the best piece of golf property I’ve ever seen,” designer Jack Nicklaus charted grand-scale holes across gently sloping terrain creased by sandy arroyos and bounded by rugged mountains. In 2019, Nicklaus returned to create a handful of new holes at the renamed Cove Club (now private). The revised layout, which brings players to the sea on both nines, has upgraded playing surfaces, restyled bunkers and new landscaping.

Chileno Bay (No. 10), a splendid Tom Fazio-designed golf course marked by graceful, flowing landforms intended to simulate rolling ocean waves, benefitted from a makeover by Discovery Land Co. that introduced colorful vegetation and bright white sand in its formal bunkers. The immaculately-groomed course, framed by desert foothills and interlaced with sandy arroyos, features interior mountain vistas and a sea view from every hole. The back nine builds to a crescendo at the par-4 18th hole, which tumbles downhill to an infinity-edge green. The otherwise-private club is accessible to guests of Chileno Bay Resort & Residences.

Rancho San Lucas, the Greg Norman-designed course that plays nip and tuck with the Pacific, makes an auspicious debut on Golfweek’s list at No. 12. Unveiled in February 2020, the layout spans three different ecosystems, rambling through huge windswept dunes at the start, climbing through a thick cactus forest creased by arroyos, and returning players to the beach on the back nine. Known for his ‘least-disturbance’ approach, Norman kept earthmoving to a minimum to retain the site’s contours. Forty steep-walled pot bunkers constructed from recycled artificial turf dot the links-style course. Rancho San Lucas is a private club with access available to guests of Solmar Group hotels, including the on-site Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas resort.

Tied with Rancho San Lucas at No. 12 is Querencia, a marvelous Tom Fazio creation and the centerpiece of a private 1,800-acre golf community set in rugged desert foothills high above the Sea of Cortes. Loosely translated as “sanctuary”, Querencia, known for its slick, multi-tiered greens, takes players on a roller-coaster ride across steep hills and bluffs, with several holes set along the edges of deep canyons and rocky arroyos. Fazio’s attention to detail is evident at every turn at Querencia, with palm trees and lush vegetation artfully blended with the native desert border. Broad contoured fairways and harmonious transitions mark this challenging yet playable course.

The prime amenity at a 1,400-acre master-planned community, Twin Dolphin (No. 15) occupies a superb location along the corridor linking the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Opened in 2018, the course, built by Fred Couples and Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design, sprawls across a broad sloping plateau bisected by three major arroyos. Perched 180 meters above sea level, the layout, known for its fast-running fairways, dramatic rock outcrops and stark mountain backdrop, features a sweeping ocean view from every hole. Twin Dolphin is a private club accessible to guests of Montage Los Cabos, a resort hotel on Santa Maria Bay; and the Montage Residences.

Originally built as a resort course in 1999, El Dorado Golf & Beach Club (No. 16) is now a private resort community under the aegis of Discovery Land Co. The Jack Nicklaus-designed layout, featuring rolling saddled fairways, huge bunker complexes and picturesque green sites, meanders through a pair of stark canyons divided by a huge rocky hill. Bristling desert vegetation, dramatic rock formations and four interior lakes flank the fairways, with water in play at several holes. El Dorado’s signature hole is the short par-3 16th, its ledged green set directly above the beach and swept by onshore sea breezes. The other Los Cabos courses voted to Golfweek’s Top 50 roster include El Cardonal at Diamante (No. 24), Quivira (No. 25), Cabo del Sol – Desert (No. 29), Cabo Real (No. 37), Costa Palmas (No. T39), and Puerto Los Cabos – Norman/Nicklaus (No. 41).

The Desert Course at Cabo del Sol, a brilliant Tom Weiskopf creation that will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year, reopened for play March 1. The course, closed several months ago due to COVID-19 restrictions, fully partakes of the region’s ocean-mountain-desert ecosystem. Routed in mountain foothills high above the Cove Club, the Jack Nicklaus-designed gem formerly known as the Ocean Course, the Desert Course is a classic test prized by shotmakers. All 18 holes on the 7,049-yard, par-72 resort venue serve up panoramic views of the glittering Sea of Cortes.

“We’re happily anticipating the reopening of the Desert Course,” said Erik Evans, Cabo del Sol’s director of golf. “As life in Los Cabos gets back to normal, we’re finding that golfers continue to travel here to enjoy a safe social distancing sport that’s more popular now than ever before.”

As part of the club’s “Healthy, Happy & Safe” initiative, Cabo del Sol is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA) and the Health Department of Mexico to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Rigorous cleaning, sanitation and disinfection procedures have been expanded and enhanced above the club’s already high standards.

Chiseling holes into rugged terrain crisscrossed by canyon-like arroyos and winding barrancas, Weiskopf produced a masterful layout in the Desert Course. Dished-out fairways are framed by granite rock outcrops and a dense cactus forest punctuated by multi-armed cardon cacti similar to the saguaro of the Arizona desert. The variety of cactus on this well-groomed spread—barrel, jumping cholla, organ pipe and many more—is astonishing. Ocotillo, palo blanco, mesquite and gnarled torote trees also flourish here. Created with a great deal of sensitivity to the Baja environment, the holes appear airlifted into the desert.

Broad fairway corridors with few forced carries instill confidence from the multiple sets of forward tees, ensuring an enjoyable experience for players at all ability levels. Large, sculpted bunkers marked by dramatic capes and bays signpost the fairways and defend the greens. Subtly contoured greens, a Weiskopf trademark, provide tantalizing targets, their long slopes, gentle rolls and distinctive tiers requiring a sure touch with the putter.

While the fairways are wide, the Desert Course presents a handful of semi-blind tee shots that make landing areas appear narrower than they really are. With its numerous risk-reward options, this well-strategized test needs to be played more than once to learn its nuances.

Pace and variety are the Desert’s strong suits. Drivable par fours at the fourth and seventh holes are balanced by sturdy par fives at the third and 12th holes, each a cross-country quest aimed into Pacific headwinds that calls for three solid shots to reach the green. The dazzling downhill par-3 16th hole, the sea flooding the horizon beyond the putting surface, requires better players to funnel the ball to selected pin locations on the large, sloping green. Average players can bail out to safe right side to avoid trouble on the left.

“With its dramatic views of the Sea of Cortes, the Desert Course at Cabo del Sol is one of the most unique desert layouts I’ve designed,” Weiskopf said. “The rare natural beauty of the ocean, mountain and desert environment provides an ideal setting and some of the best terrain for golf anywhere in the world. My design incorporates traditional bunkering, expansive greens, wide fairways, multiple tee placements, natural waste areas and spectacular ocean views. It’s one of the most scenic courses I’ve designed.”

The Desert Course is served by Cabo del Sol’s stately 40,000-square-foot clubhouse, which fuses colonial and traditional architecture with modern amenities to create a distinctive Mexican hacienda design. Marked by stone floors and high-beamed ceilings, the clubhouse features an expansive golf shop, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and picturesque views from its open-air verandas and landscaped terraces.

Cabo del Sol is convenient to two on-site hotels: Hacienda del Mar Los Cabos, a beachfront resort conceived as a traditional Mexican village; and Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos, an all-inclusive hotel with guest rooms perched on a bluff above the Sea of Cortes. Through May 31, green fees for the Desert Course are $225 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; and $175 after 11:00 a.m. All-day rate drops to $165 starting June 1. Tee times: 866 231-4677; or e-mail reservations at reservations@cabodelsol.com.

The socially distant sport got a shot in the arm from the pandemic, and demographic trends could take it to new heights.

Golf was just working its way out of the rough when the pandemic hit. After an initial shock last spring, the sport is poised for its best year since Tiger Woods was at the height of his popularity two decades ago. There is still plenty of green for investors to aim for.

Rounds played in the U.S. fell by 8.5% in March and a whopping 42% in April compared with a year earlier, according to the National Golf Foundation, as many courses were closed. But the socially distanced nature of the sport led to a furious rebound. By last month, rounds played were 37% higher and up handsomely for the entire year, even with the spring lockdowns. Even though other parts of their business such as clubhouse dining remain depressed, golf courses find themselves in far better financial shape than a few years ago.

Back in 2016, a quarter of public golf courses surveyed by the NGF said they were in “poor” or “very poor” financial condition—slightly worse than in the aftermath of the 2008-09 financial crisis. By last year, only 8% of public courses reported similar conditions. The proportion reporting that they were in “good” or “great” shape had doubled.

Stock-market investors have few, if any, opportunities to benefit directly from courses’ reversal of fortune, but there are other parts of the golf business that depend on financially healthy fairways.

The handful of stocks that give investors exposure to the sport have delivered strong returns after an initial pandemic shock. Equipment and apparel maker Acushnet Holdings , known for brands such as Titleist and FootJoy, has edged the S&P 500 by 14 percentage points in the past year. Golf Galaxy owner Dick’s Sporting Goods has beaten the market by 32 percentage points. Equipment seller Callaway Golf , which lost three quarters of its value in the first weeks of the Covid-19 bear market, has rebounded, beating the market by 13 percentage points. Along the way, Callaway gained even more exposure to the sport by merging with driving-range operator Topgolf.

What type of test/proof do I need to show to the CDC upon my return?

According to the CDC announcement, all air passengers returning to the United States will be required to get a viral test within the 3 days (72 hours) before their flight to the USA departs, and provide written documentation of their laboratory test result (paper or electronic copy) to the airline or provide documentation of having recovered from COVID-19.
American Airlines is adding new non-stop service between New York’s JFK International Airport (JFK) and Los Cabos (SJD) beginning in December. Flights will operate five times per week through March and will operate daily during the peak weeks between Dec. 17 and Jan. 5, 2021.

In addition, the carrier is adding direct service on Saturdays from Austin, Texas (AUS) to SJD; and direct service on Saturdays from Sacramento, California (SMF) during the peak holiday season (Dec. 19 – Jan. 2, 2021) and again on Saturdays from March 6 through April 3. Both cities are prominent state capitals with sizable urban and metropolitan populations.

“With Los Cabos being the fastest growing destination in Mexico, it’s our priority to continue to expand accessibility for travelers across the United States from east to west,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “We are pleased to work with American Airlines on the three new direct routes to Los Cabos from New York, Sacramento and Austin. We can’t wait to welcome many more first-time visitors to experience our world-class destination.”

Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, American, together with its regional partners, operates an extensive international and domestic network. DFW, its largest hub, serves as American’s primary gateway to Mexico. In December, American will fly to 23 destinations in Mexico from DFW. The airline will increase service to SJD from DFW with up to five daily flights on a Boeing 737 between December and April. American also intends to operate daily service from their large hub on the east coast, Charlotte (CLT), with daily service during the winter season.

American continues its expansion in Mexico and recently announced the launch of two new destinations in the country–La Paz and Loreto. Both destinations will connect to the airline’s hubs in DFW and Phoenix (PHX).

“We are thrilled about our two new destinations in Mexico, La Paz and Loreto, as well as continuing to grow our seasonal service to popular destinations such as Los Cabos, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta,” said Jose María Giraldo, Director Regional of American in Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Ecuador. “This growth shows our airline’s firm commitment to Mexico, where we have continued to operate uninterrupted service for almost 80 years.”

All flights are available for purchase on www.aa.com.
